China Mobile is staying in Dow Jones Sustainability Index

The results of the 2010 Dow Jones Sustainability Indexes (DJSI) annual review were announced on September 9th, 2010. China Mobile Limited has once again been accepted for inclusion in the DJSI, for the third year in succession. So far, China Mobile is the only company from mainland China to have ever received a listing on the DJSI.

DJSI assesses the sustainability performance of companies on a yearly basis. This year, 48 companies were newly included on the DJSI, while 46 firms were deleted from the list – resulting in a total of 318 index components. The new additions to the DJSI include Standard Chartered and Morgan Stanley; deletions from the Index are Toyota Motor and Royal Dutch Shell. Eleven of the companies listed on the DJSI are operating in the telecommunications sector. Except for China Mobile, Telefonica, Vodafone, BT and Deutsche Telekom can be found in this group.

As the first global sustainability index, DJSI tracks the worlds’ largest companies with excellent performance in sustainability. The index selects the top 10% best performing companies from the world’s largest 2500 companies listed by the Dow Jones Global Index as its component stocks. Well-known for its authority and objectivity, DJSI’s annual review includes analysis of questionnaires submitted by companies, comments from opinion leaders and comprehensive assessment of the sustainability performance of the companies. Only the top 10% of companies in each industry can receive a listing on the DJSI. Therefore, many international companies have developed long-term corporate social responsibility strategies, and strived for years to be included on the Index. Nowadays, DJSI is used as a benchmark by social responsibility investors worldwide. By the end of December 2009, total assets under management in DJSI-based investment vehicles stood at approximately USD 8 billion.

The DJSI listing – for the third time in a row – is a reflection of the international community’s acknowledgment of the company’s continuous endeavors in pursuing sustainable development. This is not only a true honor for China Mobile, but also a driving force to keep improving the company’s sustainability performance. Based on the core value “Responsibility Makes Perfection”, China Mobile will continue to manage a fair balance between social responsibility and economic development and growth.
