The 14th Shanghai International Automobile Industry Exhibition (Auto Shanghai 2011) was held in Shanghai New International Expo Center from 21 to 28 April, 2011 with a brand new vision. The participation of automobile industry giants home and abroad in the Auto Shanghai 2011 once again proved that China, as the world’s biggest automobile market, has its own unique charm.
Auto Shanghai 2011 is organized by China Association of Automobile Manufacturers, China Council for the Promotion of International Trade Shanghai Sub–Council and China Council for the Promotion of International Trade Automotive Sub–Council. Both Shanghai International Exhibition Co.,Ltd. and Messe Muenchen International / IMAG Internationaler Messe- und Ausstellungsdienst GmbH are the co-organizers. The special supporter is China Machinery Industry Federation, and the supporter is the Society of Automotive Engineers of China (SAE China).
China’s auto market remains the biggest one and has become the global focus of the auto industry. Auto Shanghai 2011 is held under such a circumstance. It has an exhibition space of 230,000 square meters, which increases by 35% compared to that of the last time, and is going to be the biggest one of this kind this year world-wide. 2,000 vehicle makers from 20 countries will gather together in Auto Shanghai 2011 and make it one of the most important auto events around the world.
Independent Brands Appear in High-Key and Compete Internationally
With rapid development of Chinese auto industry, domestic car makers have achieved great progress in strength and brand. For the first time, both domestic and international car makers exhibit and compete in the same hall, which is one of the highlights of the Auto Shanghai 2011.
Top six local automobile groups FAW, SAIC, DFM, CHANGAN, GAC and BAW gather in Auto Shanghai 2011 again and each of them enlarge their booths to a new scale to bring their independently developed products or mass-produced cars. FAW and DFM Group respectively hold a space over 3,000 square meters (including indoor and outdoor area). SAIC and SGM go on the tradition of a “joint hall” and occupy the whole E1 Hall. After acquiring passenger car section of Volvo, Geely enlarges its exhibition space to 3,000 square meters this year, and brings 36 new car models. Chery holds a space which reaches 2,600 square meters, and Great Wall holds a space which is close to 2,000 square meters. This fully demonstrates the confidence and capability of the domestic brands. Other domestic car makers such as BYD, Brilliance, JAC, Haima, Southeast, Lifan, Hafei, Zoety, Liuzhou Motor and Kinglong bring their own new cars, making Auto Shanghai 2011 highly prosperous. Moreover, several new brands, such as DS which is the fruit of the joint efforts of Changan and PSA and the joint brand of DFM and Yulon, makes the debut with high quality and fresh image.
International Giants Show High Attention, New Brands Emit Brilliant Lights
All of the global vehicle giants are present and increase their scales and standards, which demonstrates that they have viewed Auto Shanghai as one of the most important auto events.
Volkswagen Group holds a space reaching over 8,500 square meters, which is the biggest in the history of Auto Shanghai. Volkswagen Group strikes the event with its seven brands, which are Volkswagen, Audi, Skoda, Seat, Bentley, Lamborghini and Bugatti. Seat and Bugatti make their debut inChinaand Auto Shanghai respectively. Volkswagen holds a space which reaches 3,500 square meters and introduce the new version of Beetle. BMW Group doubles its exhibition space to 5,000 square meters and presents its brands such as BMW, Mini and Rolls-Royce with brilliant stage design. Mercedes-Benz, Maybach and Smart each hold a space close to 3,000 square meters, and the new design of CLS from Mercedes-Benz becomes the focus of many Chinese auto fans.
Despite the earthquake and tsunami, Japanese car makers such asToyota, Honda and Nissan make their presences in Auto Shanghai with high key. FAW Toyota, GAC Toyota and Lexus from Toyota Group display over 60 models on the 4,900-square-meter stage. And the Toyota Partner Robot which enjoyed high popularity during Shanghai Expo makes a presence too. Honda displays quite a few car models from GAC Honda, DFM Honda and Acura. DFM Nissan and Infiniti from Nissan Group hold a space which reaches 3,000 square meters, and introduce an electronic concept car, new intelligent robots and many other classic models.
USautomotive giants GM, Ford and Chrysler gather together again. GM and Shanghai GM jointly hold a space which reaches 4,500 square meters, and introduce the global debut ofMalibu. Ford displays advanced technologies concerning new energy, and introduces the Asian debut of 3 electronic car models and a concept car.
Auto Shanghai 2011 has attracted many luxury brands such as Porsche, Ferrari, Maserati, Aston-Martin, Lamborghini, Bently, Rolls-Royce, Spykers, Lorinser, Jaguar and Landrover. And Volvo, Citroen, Peugeot, Renault, Fiat, Hyundai, Kia, Mazda, Mitsubishi Motors and Suzuki bring new car models.
Commercial Vehicles and Components Participate Actively
In outdoor commercial vehicle area, FAW Jiefang, DFM, SAIC, Benz, Volvo, CNHTC, MAN, Foton JAC, Dayun Motor and Jinbei Auto bring their new models. CNHTC and MAN for the first time jointly exhibit advanced heavy trucks. The largest commercial vehicle manufacturer Daimler Group exhibits its Benz trucks in Auto Shanghai. After 6 years in blank, Volvo, the second largest group in commercial vehicle industry, bring their commercial vehicles and Sunwin Bus to exhibition again in 2011, showing the latest electric bus. Paccar Inc from theUnited Statesand Scania fromSwedenalso join the event this year.
And top ranking international automotive component manufacturers participate enthusiastically. Global auto components giants such as Bosch, Johnson Controls, Continental, ThyssenKrupp, ZF, Delphi, Honeywell, Faurecia Group, BorgWarner, Eaton, Dana, ArvinMeritor, TRW, Denso, Aisin take part in the exhibition and launch a promotion at Auto Shanghai 2011.
Auto Shanghai 2011 has attracted world-class design companies such as Pininifarina which is always used by Ferrari and Icona to join the event for the first time. Icona makes its debut inChinaby introducing two electronic cars, one of which is a concept car revealed globally for the first time.
Series of Side Events Establish Cooperative Platform
While making efforts to guarantee the success of Auto Shanghai 2011, the organizer also arranges four major side events to establish a cooperative platform.
Forum: The forum entitled Auto Shanghai Summit 2011 was held on April 18 at the Shanghai Grand Ballroom in Kerry Hotel Pudong Shanghai. The theme of the forum is Innovation For Tomorrow — Industry Prospects Under New Trends. The forum included speeches, round-table meetings and seminars, etc. Nation governors, local governors and CEO from Chinese and multinational automobile manufacturers were invited to deliver speeches, and had discussion on the automobile manufacturer mode and the development of Chinese automobile industry in the “Twelfth Five-Years Plan”.
Media Days: 19-20 April. Major exhibitors held press conferences at their booths or at meeting rooms on April 19 and 20.
Car Design Night: The 2011Shanghai car design night was held at Intercontinental Shanghai Pudong Hotel on 19 April. World-famous designers in auto industry and advanced ideas of car design gathered together once again.
Technology Seminars: Seventeen technology seminars are held during the exhibition, including buyers’ conference, match-making between car makers and components manufacturers, and trading events for various supply chain companies. The topics of the seminars involve technology, products and manufacturing.
