According to the 2010 annual report recently released by the International Congress and Conference Association (ICCA), Shanghai hosted 81 international association meetings in 2010, 23 more than 2009. Shanghai ranked 21st in ICCA ranking in 2010 (28th in 2009).
2010 saw Shanghai`s MICE tourism delivering an outstanding performance. With the commitment of Shanghai Municipal Tourism Administration, Shanghai attracted a whole myriad of influential conventions and meetings, including “The 26th International Congress of Radiology”, “The 48th Annual Meeting Orthopedic”, and “The 2nd International Conference on Global Monsoon”, which brought together thousands of and domestic and foreign delegates and thus greatly promoted the development of meetings tourism of Shanghai.
In the meanwhile, high-level conferences were held in Shanghai in 2010 by United Nations agencies like UN-Habitat, UNESCO, UNIDO, UNDP, UNEP, United Nations Economic and Social Affairs as well as over 30 international organizations like the World Health Organization (WHO), the International Network for Bamboo, the World Meteorological Organization, the World Trade Organization, International Ecological Security Cooperation Group, FAO (FOA) and International Monetary Fund (IMF). These conferences explained the dramatic increase in the number of governmental conferences in Shanghai last year.
From 2006, Shanghai began to benefit from the help of “Shanghai Conference Ambassadors”, high-profile individuals from associations worldwide who have played an instrumental role in channeling the association meetings to Shanghai. Thanks to their help, in terms of the number of association meetings hosted, Shanghai stood as number 21 in 2010 as compared to number 37 in 2005. The boom of association meetings was also attributable to the support of the men and women from all walks of life of the city, the opportunities brought by the World Expo and the cooperation between Shanghai Municipal Tourism Administration and ICCA.
