China’s new plans and policies in promoting domestic and foreign trade

Recently, the State Council of China officially released the 12th Five-year Development Plan for the Domestic Trade (hereinafter referred to as the Plan), which is prepared by the Ministry of Commerce together with other relevant departments. This is the first national special plan for the domestic trade in China since the reform and opening up. Launched under a strategic background of boosting domestic demands, especially the consumption demands, the Plan is of great importance in guiding the behavior of the market entity, realizing the healthy and rapid development of the domestic trade and playing the role of domestic trade in expanding consumption, improving people’s livelihood and guiding production. What have been achieved in APEC for China

On September 9, Chen Deming, China’s Minister of Commerce who was, accompanying the state leaders, attending the 20th Informal Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Economic Leaders’ Meetings in Vladivostok, Russia was jointly interviewed by reporters from CCTV, Xinhua News Agency, Phoenix TV and HKSTV. In the interview, he answered questions concerning the results of the Meetings on economic and trade issues, signing of Sino-Canada investment protection agreement, stabilization of foreign trade growth and response to the case-filing of anti-dumping against China’s photovoltaic products by the EU, the summary of which is as follows: Continue reading

Obama challenges China’s autos and auto parts export

United States Trade Representative Ron Kirk announced on the 17th of September that the United States has requested dispute settlement consultations with the Government of China at the World Trade Organization (WTO) concerning China’s auto and auto parts “export base” subsidy program. Under the program, China provides extensive subsidies to auto and auto parts producers located in designated regions, known as “export bases,” that meet export performance requirements. China’s program appears to provide export subsidies that are prohibited under WTO rules because they severely distort trade. The subsidies provide an unfair advantage to auto and auto parts manufacturers located in China, which are in competition with producers located in the United States and other countries. Based on publicly available documents, “export bases” made at least $1 billion in subsidies available to auto and auto-parts exporters in China during the years 2009 through 2011. Continue reading

CEO of Lenovo

Yang Yuanqing is chairman and chief executive officer of Lenovo. He returned to the chairman post in 2011 and has been leading Lenovo’s global business as CEO since 2009. Mr. Yang has served as chairman of the board of Lenovo Group Limited previously from 2005-2009, after having held the CEO position prior to 2005. Mr. Yang joined Lenovo in 1989. Under his leadership, Lenovo has been China’s best-selling PC brand since 1997. In 1999, Lenovo ranked as first in PC sales in Asia-Pacific (excluding Japan) and has maintained this position ever since. Continue reading
