Mainland China, Hong Kong and Macao signed Closer Economic Partnership Arrangement Agreement on Trade in Services
Chinese Vice Minister of Commerce Wang Shouwen and Director of the Department of Finance of Hong Kong Special Administration Region Government John Tsang Chun-wah signed Mainland China and Hong Kong Closer Economic Partnership Arrangement Agreement on Trade in Services (hereinafter referred to as “the agreement”) in Hong Kong on November 27, 2015. The agreement will be officially implemented on June 1, 2016. Attending the signing ceremony were Chief Executive of the Hong Kong Special Administration Region Leung Chun Ying and Deputy Director of Central Government’s Liaison Office in Hong Kong SAR Qiu Hong. The 26th session of the U.S.-China Joint Commission on Commerce and Trade
U.S. Secretary of Commerce Penny Pritzker and U.S. Trade Representative Michael Froman on the 23rd of November led a U.S. delegation in discussions with Vice Premier Wang Yang and other Chinese government officials as part of the 26th session of the U.S.-China Joint Commission on Commerce and Trade (JCCT) in Guangzhou, China. U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack and U.S. Ambassador to China Max Baucus also participated in this year’s JCCT. At the conclusion of the discussions, the United States announced key outcomes in the areas of intellectual property rights and enforcement, pharmaceuticals and medical devices, competition policy, and technology policy. China’s outward investment and economic cooperation in January-November
In January-November 2015, China’s outward investment and cooperation maintained a sound development momentum. The direct investment overseas maintained a rapid growth of double digit rates, and is expected to surpass the growth goal of the whole year by 10%. The construction of overseas economic and trade cooperation zones, infrastructure construction and foreign contract projects showed their own remarkable strength. The number of large scale projects increased obviously. China has entered into the stage of capital export and industry export. All of these strongly supported the construction of “Belt and Road” and the international capacity cooperation. Expansion of Information Technology Agreement concludes
On December 16, 2015, the WTO negotiation on the expansion of Information Technology Agreement (hereinafter referred to as the expansion) was announced to be concluded in Nairobi, Kenya. The participants reached a comprehensive agreement on the expansion, and issued the Minister Declaration on Expanding Trade on Information Technology Products. Continue reading

Taiwan’s National Palace Museum Southern Branch to enrich education and culture
Taiwan’s National Palace Museum Southern Branch (NPMSB) is expected to enrich the educational and cultural environs of southern Taiwan’s Yunlin and Chiayi counties as well as Tainan City, ushering in the development of tourism as well as cultural and creative industries, National Palace Museum (NPM) Director Fung Ming-chu stated today. 20 years of WTO
The World Trade Organization (WTO) celebrates its 20th anniversary in 2015. The WTO began life on 1 January 1995, but its trading system is half a century older. Since 1948, the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT) had provided the rules for the system. (The second WTO ministerial meeting, held in Geneva in May 1998, included a celebration of the 50th anniversary of the system.) Continue reading

Reflections on 2015

2015 is definitely not a good year economically. The economic growth has slowed down signicantly in China. The GDP growth is estimated to fall below 7% in 2015. I recalled that we did a cover story in the March of 2012 regarding China’s GDP fell under 8%. 8% was considered a bottom line at that time. Now, China can barely make 7%. Continue reading
