New Generation after the 18th
A new generation of top Chinese leaders took the stage on the 15th of November after the leadership of the ruling party changed hands. Xi Jinping was sworn in as secretary general of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC), leading the seven member Political Bureau Standing Committee. The other six members of the Party’s central leading organ are Li Keqiang, Zhang Dejiang, Yu Zhengsheng, Liu Yunshan, Wang Qishan and Zhang Gaoli. Continue reading

IPR trends Q3 2012 in Taiwan: Patent and trademark statistics
According to the latest IPR statistics released by TIPO, the number of patent backlogs dropped to less than 160,000 (159,467) prior to the end of Q3 2012. Patent applications filed domestically decreased by 4.79%, while those filed by foreigners increased by 4.16%. Trademark applications filed by both ROC nationals and foreigners have shown a significant increase by 4.97%. Among foreign applicants, Japan continued to claim the top spot in both invention patent and trademark applications. Continue reading

Is quantitative easing to blame?

What is quantitative easing (QE)? There is official definition and there is lay definition.
Since the global financial crisis, both the Bank of England and the Federal Reserve of the US have used the policy of QE to revive economic growth. Usually, central banks control interest rates. But when interest rates can go no lower, a central bank’s last resort is to pump money into the economy directly. That is QE. The way the central bank does this is by buying assets using money it has created out of thin air. Continue reading
